Bun There, Dog Dat!: Dat Dog

by Emily on October 11, 2011

Last week I finally got my silly butt to Dat Dog. Crazy that it took me so long to try it out, but even crazier how good it was! I went with the Beagle dog and two girlfriends and we each got something different. A Veggie Dog for one (which she said was just a sliced up veggie burger in a bun), an Alligator Sausage for the other (topped with the classic trio of yellow mustard, ketchup, and relish), and a Crawfish Sausage for me, topped with onions, cheese, and guacamole. Unfortunately, the Beagle dog forgot her wallet…

I was certainly expecting the meat to be awesome, but the bun? Now that I didn’t expect. Dat Dog will have you questioning those Bunny Bread buns of your childhood once you taste their incredible sourdough buns, which are slightly sweet and toasty from a quick turn on the grill. In addition to pairing well with all of the different meats that are offered, these buns are also incredibly functional since they’re sturdy enough to hold a hefty amount of condiments and toppings. And considering toppings are optional but complimentary with the purchase of whichever hot dog you choose, feel free to go ahead and load up. A German Brat with creole mustard, sauerkraut, and onions? You got it. A Polish Kielbasa with diced tomatoes, cheese, and andouille sauce? Go for it. A Louisiana Hot Sausage with wasabi and chili? Bring your Tums.

My crawfish sausage was awesome and definitely a must-try for those in search of some unique local flavor–I just wish it had packed a little more heat. Next time I go I’d like to try the alligator sausage, since it sent my friend’s nose for a run. But no matter what you order, Dat Dog definitely gives you your money’s worth of food and the no-fuss quirkiness of the place comes at no extra charge. The guys working there were all excited to serve us and very enthusiastic about the food they were dishing out. Maybe their friendliness was attributable to the fact that we were three cute chicks with one super cute dog, but I beg to differ.

**Dat Dog is cash only and closed on Mondays. ATM with service fee is located on site.**

I love Dat Dog! So thankful my house is only a few blocks away. Did your friend like the veggie dog? I’ve debated getting it many times. I’m a huge veggie burger fan, so thinking I might like it if I wanted to mix up my order every once in a while?

Alison, she didn’t say she didn’t like it but I don’t think it was exactly what she was expecting. She described it as a veggie burger sliced up and put into a bun. If that’s the case, then there’s no reason you can’t make that at home. Of course, you don’t have Dat Dog’s delicious sourdough buns at home, so maybe it’s worth a try!
