Ever since I started making the conscious effort to eat more vegetarian food, I’ve noticed that my subconscious has been thinking meat-free long before I made the decision to do so. At La Macarena Pupuseria and Latin Cafe on Hampson in the Riverbend I’ve ordered the Vegetarian Delight every single time, just because it fills me up with all my favorite things: smooth as silk re-fried beans, cheese pupusas (thick, handmade corn tortillas filled with cheese–a staple in El Salvador), curtido (pickled slaw), a sweet corn tamale, and plump, caramelized plantains. Combined with one or two tapas, it’s the kind of dish that’s easily shared while also satisfying each textural and flavor craving. It’s crunchy, chewy, creamy, cheesy, and… wait for it, “caramelizy” (OK, so I made that one up). All jokes aside, La Macarena is cash only and BYOB, but the friendly service and yummy food will have you coming back to the “bend” over and over again.
